Im April hat die Band Clowns ihr neustes Album »Nature/Nurture« veröffentlicht. Christian Wollart hat mit Stevie Williams, dem Frontmann der Band, gesprochen. Welche Songs haben ihn in seinem Leben inspiriert und begleitet?

Trotz Szene- und manchmal auch Mainstream-Erfolg gibt es da immer noch die Bands mit dem guten alten DIY-Ethos, die, sofern es bei einem großen Act möglich ist, noch alle Strippen in der Hand halten. Clowns aus Australien sorgten 2017 mit »Lucid Again« für eine nicht zu verachtende Welle in der alternativen Musikwelt, ihr neustes Werk »Nature/Nurture« setzt sie mit ihrem wilden Mix aus straightem Hardcore-Punk und rotziger Rock’n’Roll-Energie jedoch endgültig auf die Landkarte aller Fans wilder Rockmusik. Eine gute Gelegenheit, um Frontmann und Meister des gepflegten Wahnsinn, Stevie Williams, nach den Songs zu fragen, die ihn in seinem Leben am meisten beeinflusst haben.

The First Song I’ve Heard

Is it a cop-out to say The Wiggles? Some might think so, but I don’t. Sure they are a children’s band, but Big Red Car I think is the first song I ever remember, so there. Also, The Wiggles formed in 1991 (the year I was born) so I guess you could say I’m fiercely loyal to their early records and original lineup. bit of pub trivia for you, they are the highest earning Australian musicians, higher than AC/DC even! Also, Murray Cook (the red wiggle) has come to our shows before and I can confirm he is a 100% stand up bloke.

The Song That Reminds Me of My School Days

That would be Radiohead’s 2+2=5. I was one of those wanker kids who spent a good 2 years of my teenagehood listening to nothing but Radiohead. Absolutely amazing band! Their ability to transgress genres and push the boundaries of their creativity will always be an influence on me.

It’s the reason why you’ll hear a 2-minute punk track up against a psych prog-punk jam featuring a sitar on our latest record Nature/Nurture. They taught me that bands don’t need to create the same music to sound like the same band or even for it to sound like the same record. When I was 16 I even got 2+2=5 tattooed on the inside of my lip in homage to them, but I haven’t gotten around to reading 1984, haha.

The First protest Song I Knew

Midnight Oil – Beds Are Burning. One of the greatest protests songs written by one of Australia’s greatest bands. It’s a tune in protest of Australian colonial history and the injustice that indigenous Australians faced as a result. The UK is a beautiful country but back in 1788 they kinda fucked shit up big time over in Aus. I love the way The Oils dished this song of protest directly into the ears of middle-class white Australia, the kinds of people who needed to hear it most.

the Song That Makes me Cry

U2’s Beautiful Day has always brought a tear to my eye. Not because of it’s positive sentiment and message of hope, but because it’s just so, so bad.

The Song That I’m Most Proud Of

The song that I’m most proud of from our back catalogue would probably »Not Coping« off of Lucid Again. I love writing long songs because I enjoy the challenge of trying to make it intriguing the whole through, and on this, in particular, I’m really stoked on the marriage of punk and psychedelia that we were able to blend together in a way that felt unique and interesting.

Mixing psych and punk-rock was an idea we had to try and diversify our music and I think it would have been very easy to make it corny and tasteless but I do feel like on this track and album we did the best we could. The lyrics mean a lot to me because they are about a friend of mine who died of a heroin OD, and if you listen closely you’ll find a hidden subliminal morse code message somewhere in there about that.

The Song That Makes You Angry

It would have to be You’re Beautiful by James Blunt and it makes me angry for a few reasons. Have you heard the lyrics? He’s not singing about his girlfriend. He’s singing about a complete stranger that he has just seen in a crowded place that he got a half chub over and then he wrote a song about her – she deserves some fucking royalties for that. Furthermore, James, keep your eyes to yourself. We don’t need you teaching a generation of young boys that it’s ok to eye off women in a crowded place let lone verifying their butt hurt after inevitably realising they’ll never be with them.

If you liked her so much why don’t just say hi in a non-threatening way? Shut up with your fucking entitled cry baby bullshit. Can I just remind you as well that this was just a stranger that he saw? You don’t know her, James. She could be a fucking arsehole Nazi for all you know. It’s like dude, get a life. That guy needs to have a wank. Also, the music is pretty wishy-washy and I can’t say I’m too into the tonal quality of his voice but that’s just subjective to my ears, it’s the message I’ve got a real problem with.

The song that I like to play live

Currently, my favourite song (or succession of songs) to play is Prey For Us > May I Be Exhumed? > Nurture. The three songs in my mind are one and I love playing them because they are a wild party and I get to use my synthesiser in it.

The Song That Builds Me When I’m Down

Whenever I’m feeling shit Sick Of It All by The Distillers is a sure fire way to lift my spirit. When the song kicks in I can’t help but feel my heart start pumping, get up and start banging my head. Also, that build up around 1.50 min into the song is just so uplifting. My soul craves this song.

The Song That Should Run On My Funeral

When I die, I wanna leave this burning heck hole in style… DJ Ötzi – Hey Baby.
